LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Response to Barbara Lawall’s article in the Oct. 13th Explorer

Lawall’s Backward Stance on Prop 203

“Letter to the Editor submitted by Erica Wiberg”

I read these articles, and am physically sickened by the ignorance of society’s negative
backlash towards cannabis. Cannabis happens to be one of the most diversely curative,
useful plants this planet has. The United States spends billions of dollars importing hemp
products, due to it being illegal to grow here—items such as clothing, paper, fibers, and
food (hemp is rich in important essential fatty acids). The U. S. also spends billions of tax
dollars investigating, busting, and jailing people who use marijuana, medicinally or
recreationally. Speaking of “recreationally,” how is marijuana all that much different
from alcohol and/or cigarettes? Seriously people! Think about it. Go outside the box for
two seconds and think. Why should people be forced to use synthetic, addictive
(marijuana is NOT physically addictive) pharmaceutical drugs with terrible side effects
rather than, grow, dry and smoke a natural herb?? There have literally been zero
documented deaths from marijuana…Ever! Can the pharmaceutical companies claim the
same? Can the alcohol industry? How about the tobacco companies? NO.
Barbara Lawall states, “It’s inconceivable that a schedule 1 drug would be permitted to
be sold…” Would you like to know what I find inconceivable? That marijuana is
classified as a schedule 1 drug to begin with!

The American Medical Association has admitted to the curative properties of marijuana,
there are no documented deaths from overdose, it grows naturally and is kind on the
soil… The list of benefits could go on long enough to fill this entire paper. Its
possibilities are endless. And if you’re a religious person (as I basically am), I ask you—
who do you trust more? Man? Or God? I trust fully, that this amazing plant is a gift to
humankind and planet Earth. Let’s get with the program and change the status of the
Schedule! It’s ridiculous. It is a plant. It is natural. It is God grown. It is an herb. It is
healing…and SO much more.
